“Art in Asia and Art in Japan”

Buoyed by economic growth in China and India, the art markets of East Asia have been booming recently. In China, in anticipation of this year’s Beijing Olympic Games and the Shanghai World Exposition in 2010, art galleries from around the world are rushing to open new spaces. At the same time, plans are being made to open hundreds of new art museums there too. This rush of activity is causing diversification and other fundamental changes that are being felt in art markets around the world. How should the art community in Japan respond to these changes? What role can Japan expect to play in the new Asian art scene?
Fumio Nanjo, the Director of Mori Art Museum, and Misa Shin, the Executive Director of Art Fair Tokyo, will discuss the future of the Asian art scene and art in Japan.
