Talk Series: Dialogues in Art

Art develops variously as the contemporary society progresses and changes bewilderingly. We will invite several leading experts in contemporary culture to take part in this talk series "Dialogues in Art" which will be held continuously during the course of ART FAIR TOKYO. 'Art Market and East Asia', 'On Collecting Art' and 'Revolution by Art' will be the keywords of 2009 to discuss the current art world and to send our messages to Japan and Asia.

One may wonder how this current world economic crisis can influence the art market in Asia. Under this circumstance, is there a possibility of a new market or a business model in Asia? Gallerists and curators will deliver voices on global economic situation and the circulation of art.

Speakers' Profiles

Yukihito Tabata
Director, TOKYO GALLERY + BTAP, Tokyo and Beijing
He was born as the second son of the founder of Tokyo Gallery, the first Contemporary Art gallery in Japan. He has organized a number of exhibitions on Chinese Contemporary Art at Tokyo Gallery and other museums in Japan and abroad. In 2002, he opened a new art space, Beijing Tokyo Art Project (BTAP) in the northeast part of Beijing, Dashanzi. Both Tokyo Gallery and BTAP are currently participating in various international art fairs introducing East Asian Contemporary Art works to the world.


Yun Chea Gab
Executive Director, ARARIO GALLERY, Seoul, Beijing and New York
Born in Korea. Obtained a B.A. in Art Studies from Hong Ik University, Seoul and an M.A. degree in Indian Art History from Targore University, India. Has curated notable exhibitions on contemporary art in China, India, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands and the United States.


Philip Tinari
Art Critic / Writer / Curator / China Advisor, Art Basel
Writer and curator specializing in contemporary art in China. Has published a book entitled "Artists in China" and contributed articles on contemporary Chinese art to Artforum and The New York Times Magazine. Has also contributed to catalogues for exhibitions at museums including the Guggenheim and San Francisco MoMA.

Misa Shin
Executive Director, ART FAIR TOKYO
CEO of Misa Shin & Co. In 2005 she was appointed Executive Director of ART FAIR TOKYO. Previously, she was manager of PR and Development at Mori Art Museum. She obtained her M.A. degree from New York University, New York. She has taught Art Administration at Tokyo National University of Art and Music since 2000. Author of "The Art Industry: In Search of the Ultimate Commodity" (Bigaku Shuppan, Tokyo, 2008).

The notion of 'Buying Art' and 'Collecting Art'. What is the meaning of collecting art? Where does the motivation of collecting art come from? Does it come from one's passion towards art, one's mind to support the artist, or self-expression? Notable art collectors will discuss the notion of collecting art and its relation of formulating a culture.

Ryutaro Takahashi
Contemporary Art Collector, Psychiatrist
Chairman of Kokoronokai Medical Cooperation. In 2004, He opened a space 'Takahashi Collection' to exhibit his art collection at Kagurazaka and a new branch in Shirogane, Tokyo in 2008. An exhibition "Neoteny Japan, Takahashi Collection" which introduces approximately 80 works of his art collection, has been traveling across Japan. The exhibition will take place at The Ueno Royal Museum in Tokyo for the third stops from May 23rd, 2009 and plan to be exhibited at four other places.


Francesca von Habsburg
Founder and Chairman, Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (Vienna)
Francesca von Habsburg studied art at St. Martin's School of Art and history of modern art at the ICA in London. In 1989, von Habsburg became chief curator of special exhibitions of the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection at the Villa Favorita in Lugano. In 1991, she founded ARCH Foundation, which is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of cultural heritage. In 2002, she founded T-BA21 ― Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary in Vienna, Austria.

3: "Revolution by Art!?" ~Shaping a community that art enables~

Sunday, April 5 13:00 - 15:00 (Door opens 12:45)

Art can be a dynamic driving force that changes one's community. After 2000, there are several art projects which have taken places in various regions such as Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial in Nigata prefecture which pays attentions to the history and the resource of the particular region. Can citizens change the society by starting up an art project by themselves? We will discuss the possibilities on art that changes society through art projects that are lined up in 2009.

Director, Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial
Chairman of Art Front Gallery. General Director of Chichu Art Museum. Professor at Joshibi University of Art and Design (College of Art and Design). Director of Niigata City Art Museum. Born in Takada City , Niigata Prefecture , Japan in 1946. Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts. General Coordinator for Echigo-Tsumari Art Necklace Project since 1997.

Masato Nakamura
Artist / Associate Professor at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music
Born in Odate, Akita Prefecture,1963. He participated in 49th Venice Biennale as one of the Japanese commissioners in 2002. Nakamura's activities include inaugurating an artist initiative called Command N Projects in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, region-based projects such as 'himming' in Himi City, Toyama Prefecture, 'ZERODATE Art Project" in Odate City, Akita Prefecture, and 'kanazawa art port' in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. He is now launching a new art center in Akihabara. Nakamura is known as an art activist for his project-based engagement with art, society, and education.

Jun'ya Yamaide
Producer, Beppu Contemporary Art Festival 2009
Director, NPO BEPPU PROJECT, Artist. Participated in International Studio Program by PS1 in New York with assistance by ACC (2000-2001), stayed in Europe by scholarship from Pola Art Foundation (2002), stayed in Paris as an external scholar of Agency for Cultural Affairs (Japan) (2002-2004), founded BEPPU PROJECT with an aim to hold international exhibitions in cooperation with different organizations (2005).

Tsukasa Mori
Senior Curator, Contemporary Art Center, Art Tower Mito
He has been at the Contemporary Art Center, Art Tower Mito since the beginning of its establishment. Previously, he was a Japanese commissioner for 11th Asian Art Biennale, Bangladesh 2003 and an Art Director of Toyota Art Management.
